Beschreibung
Poetry and art formed an important part of the life of the French thinker Jacques Maritain (1882–1973). His wife Raissa was a poet, and he had many friends among artists and poets (including Ch. Péguy, G. Rouault, M. Chagall, etc.). He dedicated a vast and original part of his philosophical work to theoretical questions of art. The Responsibility of the Artist (1961) is Maritain's last major publication in this area; its foundation was based on lectures at Princeton University. In terms of content, the book The Responsibility of the Artist intersects two separate disciplines, philosophical aesthetics and philosophical ethics. However, Maritain does not address general problems of aesthetics or general problems of ethics. He starts from his own concepts of the theory of art and the theory of morality and, on this basis, names the mutual relationship between both areas.
