Japan in the eleventh century. Government official Suhavara Akitada encounters a mute boy on an abandoned road while returning to the capital, Heiankyo. Still suffering from depression after the loss of his son, he decides to take care of the child. The search for his parents reveals a tormenting story of love, murder, and abandonment, which diverts Akitada from his personal woes but jeopardizes his career and good reputation. Meanwhile, Akitada's loyal servant Tora is dealing with his own problems as his newlywed wife falls into the hands of a powerful man who will stop at nothing in his quest to control beautiful women. These two seemingly unrelated stories lead Akitada and Tora among prostitutes and professional entertainers in the red-light district, and in their wake follows murder...
