When the Angostinian hordes sweep across the southern borders of the Highlands, the bandit Jaryk Maisl and his friend, the wizard and bard Owen Odell, find themselves in a land that desperately needs heroes. In their wake, a great evil is unleashed as a mad necromancer brings back to semi-life the millennia-dead vampire king. As the final battle approaches and a strange apparition appears, Odell wonders which of the two Maisls will prevail – the selfish thief or the savior of his people, the Lightbringer.
