Around the same time that Marx began advocating for communism, Charles Darwin introduced the theory of evolution. In 1859, Marx first published a materialist conception of history and economics in his work 'A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy.' In the same year, Darwin published his book 'On the Origin of Species,' laying the foundation for the theory of the evolution of living beings. In the first half of the 19th century, the theory of evolution was generally accepted, but Darwin's theory fundamentally differed from other evolutionary theories. Before Darwin, the cause of evolution was described as a life force or a history guided by God; the spirit was considered a substance irreducible to matter. In contrast, Darwin advocated for unguided mutation and natural selection. This advocacy was purely materialistic. Neo-Darwinism has many unresolved issues. Despite this, it remains alive. The reason Darwinism survives is that its only alternative, the theory of creation, is difficult to accept.
