Beschreibung

The book 'A Life Full of Conflicts' is the first collective attempt to capture the public activities and scholarly endeavors of the significant Czech historian Jan Slavík (1885-1978) in all their dimensions. It presents eighteen texts that map Slavík's work not only in areas where he is relatively well-known (the issue of the Russian Revolution, the debate over the meaning of Czech history, polemics with Josef Pekař), but also in other circles of his interests. Slavík was a very active journalist, whose commentaries on many scholarly and social issues of the time sparked numerous thought-provoking, often sharp, and personally directed discussions from both the right and left sides of the political spectrum. The methodology of his work was significantly influenced by German sociology (especially Max Weber) and its integration into the social sciences. Through his research on the development of the Soviet Union, he was among the pioneers of the discipline of contemporary history and world Sovietology, and in the field of Czech history, he opened many new topics and historical problems from the beginnings of Czech statehood to Slavík's present. The contributors include both renowned experts and university educators, as well as emerging researchers. The book includes a new, expanded, and revised edition of the bibliography of Jan's works...
