The Greek word fysis, usually translated in the meanings of 'nature' or 'naturalness,' has become one of the defining features of archaic philosophy, which is traditionally understood primarily as 'inquiry into nature.' Searching for its original meaning thus reveals the character of the thinking that developed in Miletus, while also understanding the very nature of Ionian 'inquiry.' The starting point of the study is a broader elaboration of the well-known fact that all Milesian thought has been mediated to us through the schemata of Aristotle and Theophrastus. Furthermore, it shows the connection of fysis with Aristotle's conception of arché as material cause and critically examines the preserved texts burdened with later perspectives and terminology. It also delineates the character of Ionian 'inquiry into nature,' which should be perceived in as broad a context as possible of nearly all subsequently emerging sciences, against the backdrop of the world as cosmos and in natural harmony with religious language.
