The book presents letters in which both authors shared their dreams over the course of a year, contemplated them, and explored whether they could find certain laws of nighttime dreaming without relying on psychoanalytic or any other theories of dreams. They questioned whether it is possible to create a theory of dreams that, on one hand, does not subject dreams to the meaning and logic of the waking world, and on the other hand, does not view them merely as nonsensical chaos. Rather than a cohesive theory of dreams, the book offers a story about the birth of ideas in a correspondence dialogue. Reflections on dreams led the authors to thoughts on a realm that transcends the dichotomy of meaning and nonsense and which may be significant for areas of life beyond just dreaming.
