The book focuses on the relationships between foreign landowners and the Czechoslovak state during the period between the two world wars. Since foreigners, mostly of noble origin, owned about one-fifth of all land in Czechoslovakia after World War I, they were a group that needed to be considered when implementing land reform. The authors address the question of to what extent the effort to limit large estates reflected in the bilateral relations of Czechoslovakia with selected countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Great Britain, and France) and how specifically the reform was implemented. They provide reasons why the large estates owned by foreign individuals were, with few exceptions, affected relatively mildly and further clarify the significant differences in the treatment of owners with different nationalities.
