The translatological monograph, which originally formed a key part of Jiří Josek's habilitation thesis, offers a unique opportunity to glimpse into the creative workshop of Czech translators of Shakespeare's plays. Jiří Josek formulates and categorizes key issues related to the translation of Shakespeare's works based on his rich personal experiences. After a brief introduction to the issues of drama translation and a chapter discussing the tradition of translating Shakespeare in the Czech lands, the most extensive part of the monograph is dedicated to comparative analyses and reflections on specific examples, where Czech translators of various generations, including himself, have addressed and continue to address the challenges of differing language systems or formal and content equivalence. The comparisons examine the procedures for translating homonymous words in examples of literal and equivalent transpositions, complex metaphors, and rhythmic and phonetic differences between the original and the target language.
