Beschreibung
The Merchant of Venice is one of the peak comedies of Shakespeare's middle period. It was likely written in the autumn of 1597. Preceding it in the comedy genre is A Midsummer Night's Dream. In comparison to this playful and poetic play about the magical power of love and nature, it is clear that in The Merchant of Venice, the playwright presents the audience with a much more complex picture of the world. The story of the Jewish moneylender Shylock and the wealthy merchant Antonio occasionally takes on serious, gloomy, and at times even drastic tones. Thus, The Merchant of Venice can be considered a precursor to the so-called bitter, problem comedies, such as the later works of the playwright, All's Well That Ends Well or Measure for Measure.
