Far from Earth, on the planet Amateras, Terran colonists, led by the reincarnation of the legendary Anson Guthrie, developed a planetary consciousness. The Lunarians occupied Alpha Centauri, and also, back in the Solar System, the distant asteroid Proserpina. Earth, the Moon, and Mars are indulgently controlled by a system of artificial intelligences, cybercosm, and Teramind. Reports are reaching Amateras that Teramind, using the Sun as a gravitational lens, made a huge discovery and then concealed it - and also sabotaged attempts by the Proserpians to utilize gravitational lenses. Guthrie's stored consciousness must travel to the Solar System and initiate an investigation. Young ex-cop Fenn successfully manages to obtain data recorded by a station on Mars; it seems to prove the existence of an ancient robotic civilization in distant space. But the skeptical Guthrie does not believe it and decides to conduct his own investigation. He obtains information convincingly showing that no such civilization exists: in fact, Teramind has planned a fraud as a pretext to gain control over humanity...
