Latin scholarship and literature significantly co-shaped the essence of European education. Literature written in Latin did not vanish with the fall of the Roman Empire but continued to develop in the spiritual environment of monasteries and later in the scholarly atmosphere of universities. From there, it spread into secular circles and seeped into the languages of European nations, fruitfully influencing the emergence of their national literatures up to the modern age. The period of its development is defined by the years 450 to 1450 and is represented by names such as Augustine, Jerome, Boethius, Benedict of Nursia, Gregory the Great, Bede the Venerable, Paul the Deacon, Alcuin, Hrabanus Maurus, John Scotus Eriugena, Hrotsvit, Carmina Burana, Hugh of Orleans, Peter Abelard, and Cosmas of Prague... and many others. Czech literary science has so far lacked an original treatment of the history of medieval Latin literature, and the publication by Prof. PhDr. Jana Nechutová, CSc., and Mgr. Dana Stehlíková, PhD., renowned experts in literary medieval studies from Masaryk University, suitably fills this significant research gap.
