The Ancient Library is gradually publishing a selection of the most famous and remarkable novels in three volumes, which will provide a concise overview of ancient Greek novelistic creation and the development of the genre from its beginnings to the turning point of antiquity. The focus of the first volume is, in accordance with its title, on romantic and adventure novels, represented by the oldest completely preserved novel, Chariton's Stories of Chaireas and Kallirhoe, the famous Ephesus Stories or The Tale of Anthea and Habrokomos by Xenophon of Ephesus, and a number of excerpts from novels that have been preserved incompletely or in retellings or digests. The volume also includes the fantastic-utopian novel by Theopompus of Chios and other authors, including the famous Islands of the Sun by Iambulus, the remarkable epistolary novel The Conspiracy Against the Tyrant by Chion of Heraclea, and excerpts from other popular works.
