A significant work of world political philosophy, Man and the State, by the French philosopher Jacques Maritain (1882–1973). Many ideas from this classic work gain new relevance today in the face of the issues that political science and political philosophy are particularly intensively addressing. Foremost among these is the problem of sovereignty in relation to the state, which for the average Czech citizen evokes especially the so-called Brezhnev Doctrine of limited sovereignty, under which the Warsaw Pact troops invaded, but which is at the very center of today's theoretical contemplation of international relations, political sociology, and political philosophy in the context of globalization. Maritain's critical analysis of the concept of sovereignty is among the most remarkable in world literature.
