Beschreibung
The latest novel by the beloved Finnish humorist contains many autobiographical traits. The main character, Artti Tukkijänkä, was born during the war in territory conquered by the Soviet Union (just like Paasilinna), his whole family fled to Finnish Lapland, where Artti grew up, embarked on adventurous expeditions to the Lappish wilderness with his father, graduated, went to the army, where he invented a new type of landmine, got married, and became a journalist. Since childhood, Artti has been haunted by a rather peculiar fear that when he dies, he will not be buried with dignity - and so he decides to try out his funeral in a rehearsal while he is still healthy and full of strength. The novel contains a number of typically Paasilinna-esque gags (a fight of drunken Santas, a wedding on a raft, etc.), but it also reveals many interesting things about Finland in the second half of the 20th century, as well as about the author - the novel can also be read as Paasilinna's quirky biography.
