On an island near Helsinki, the body of a young man, former lover of police commissioner Maria Kallio, is found one unpleasant October morning. Once deserted, the island has recently been used by Merivaara, a family company trading in environmentally friendly boat paints. Exactly one year after the first body is discovered, another dead man appears, and this time the case can no longer be dismissed as an unfortunate accident. The police investigation is complicated by several factors: Commissioner Kallio must deal with a difficult relationship with one of her subordinates, share the care of her young daughter with her husband, and, above all, cope with a dangerous attraction to one of the main suspects. Alongside its tense and compelling plot, the book offers a glimpse into everyday life in contemporary Finland, which was affected in the early 1990s by a wave of crime from the former Soviet Union.
