Annotation What is the connection between tomato paste, tuna, soy, and pork? Currently, these foods have become commodities – their value is not quality, but the ability to generate profit for multinational locust companies. In this global game, we all lose, along with the planet we live on.
The plundering of nature, senseless transportation of food thousands of kilometers, poorly paid, suffering workers, most often refugees, the disintegration of local communities, and the contamination of soil and water – this summarizes the reality of an industry that theoretically arose to feed us. In reality, however, the quality of food is declining while only the profits of a few companies are rising. Italian journalist Stefano Liberti has traveled the world for many years observing the functioning of the global market – he spent a long time among migrants on the journey between Africa and Europe, writing and filming about refugees, small farmers losing their land and livelihoods, and most recently returned to Italy to dedicate a book to the consequences of the climate crisis.
The Rulers of Food is not a cheerful read, although Liberti also shows us positive examples – such as farms that strive to raise pigs in a way that allows them to experience movement outdoors and have a dignified life,…
