Beschreibung
The northernmost inhabited area of Greenland. A few dozen residents who manage to survive in harsh conditions. Their numbers continue to decline. Meanwhile, the number of journalists coming here to observe global warming and glacier melting is on the rise. However, for Ilona Wiśniewska, the north is home and the main subject of her reporting, to which she has already dedicated several books. Now she has set off for three months to the Greenlandic settlements of Siorapaluk and Qaanaaq, which can only be reached by plane in winter and by boat twice in summer for supplies. Survival is ensured by hunting bears and seals – nothing has changed that the northernmost indigenous people, the Inuit, face the same pressures as other similar communities around the world. Although conquerors of the pole learned from them how to function in the icy land, they had little understanding for their different customs and worldview. Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and there have been attempts at assimilation to make local children 'little Danes.' In recent decades, the country has become increasingly independent, but many problems persist from the past to this day. Ilona Wiśniewska, who visits the Greenlandic settlements with openness and humility, has managed to integrate into the local community and describe everyday life and concerns – even the flickering of stars on the snow.
