Beschreibung
This Czech-language nonfiction book by Salvadoran journalist Óscar Martínez recounts the desperate journeys migrants make through Central America and Mexico towards the United States. Martínez travels the route several times, speaking with migrants, people who help them and guards stationed along the border wall. He encounters the fear that drives people from their homes: fear of extortion, drug cartels and hopelessness. People from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador set out on foot through the desert and, if they succeed, climb aboard the famous Beast, a train whose passengers balance day and night on its roof while risking falls and attacks. Yet danger waits everywhere, as migrants also become targets for drug smugglers, and violence is so common that some murders never reach the newspapers.
