Are the caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad an unnecessary provocation or proof of freedom of speech and artistic expression in the Western world? Lars Vilks probably did not expect that after publishing one image, he would become the target of threats, Al-Qaeda would call for his elimination, and he would spend the rest of his life under police protection in hiding. Vilks built his artistic career on provocation and playing with boundaries. The Swedish authorities were outraged by his famous installation Nimis in a nature reserve. Did he go too far with the drawing of the Prophet Muhammad with a dog's body? Niklas Orrenius also asks whether contemporary Swedish society is hypocritical and who bears the blame for the dead in terrorist attacks. Sweden is transforming from a homogeneous society into a country of residents of various origins and many faiths. Politicians and ordinary citizens alike are facing new problems. The situation that Orrenius described in his 2016 book is changing again; Sweden is a laboratory of the future – and this also applies to Central Europe, where refugees remain primarily a scarecrow in election campaigns.
