This famous and, in many ways, mysterious series of books has greatly influenced the spiritual processes of humanity in the 20th century. (It describes events from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries; it was written and gradually disseminated during the first half of the 20th century.) Every person can find values in it that inspire them to further self-improvement. In 1894, Spalding traveled to the Far East on an archaeological expedition with eleven enthusiasts (the term Far East at that time referred to a much broader area than it does today). Upon his return, he gained fame for his stories about esoteric experiences in the Himalayan mountains and Indian plains; about encounters with remarkable masters who possessed superhuman abilities and could explain Eastern wisdom in Christian terms. However, Spalding's friends soon realized that the most important aspect of his storytelling was the profound teachings of the masters about God, the universe, humanity, the meaning of human life, and purpose. Spalding himself considered the spiritual teachings he presented in his books to be very simple and practical, and he always tried to stay away from the then-popular mysticism and theosophy. Baird Spalding's books continue to be published in many countries around the world.
