Ctirad Záhorský is an ordinary student, except that he has recently accepted an offer from the state to undergo rigorous training and become an elite assassin known as the Scarecrow. He still needs to pass his exams, however, so at the last minute he joins a group heading for a field placement in the Czech-Polish borderlands. Their task is to uncover and catalogue graves at a site where a Red Army detachment once clashed with an SS unit. The trouble is that the surrounding region still looks as though the war ended only yesterday, and the local inhabitants do not seem entirely right either. The students should be more concerned that the forests are deep and that they are not alone in them. Ctirad is still a long way from becoming the Scarecrow, but if he plans to survive, he will have to become one very quickly. This Czech-language science-fiction novel is written by Jakub Hoza.
