Beschreibung
This Czech-language novel is set in North Carolina in the 1960s. For generations, the Sassers have made moonshine in the mountains of Wilkes County. Their history is recorded in a leather-bound book owned by Jessie’s father, but Jessie wants nothing to do with it. She believes the moonshine caused her mother’s death twelve years earlier, yet her father refuses to discuss either her mother or the day she died. Jessie is consumed by a desire for the truth, a desire that drives her to seek comfort in food. The more she hurts herself, however, the stronger the “monster” becomes inside her, as the tough but compassionate school nurse calls her troubles. When Jessie defies her father, who claims that distilling alcohol runs in her blood, she decides to destroy the stills and blame a rival. Her plan revives old hostilities and exposes grievances that have never been forgiven. As she tries to set right both old and new mistakes, Jessie makes unexpected discoveries about her family, herself and the legacy that may finally provide the answers she has been seeking.
