The Moon Over the Prairie is the second book in the epic tetralogy Lonesome Dove, which represents the pinnacle of Larry McMurtry's unique perspective on the American West. It tells the story of the twenty years between the novels Dead Man's Walk and Lonesome Dove, an adventure filled with tragedy, cruelty, courage, honor, and betrayal. Texas Rangers Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call, now middle-aged men, continue to grapple with the increasing hardships of adult life. Gus due to his fateful love for Clara Forsythe and Call because of Maggie Tilton, a young prostitute who loves him. Two proud men, friends although each completely different, set out with a band of rangers to pursue Buffalo Hump – the great war chief of the Comanche tribe, Kicking Wolf – the infamous Comanche horse thief, and Ahumada – a ruthless Mexican bandit thirsting for torture. In their bitter effort to protect the advancing western frontier from the defiant Comanches, determined to defend their territory and way of life to the last breath, they are aided by companions Deets, Jake Spoon, and Pea Eye Parker.
