Kornélie. Four generations of women from the small village of Jablonia Panica in the Slovak-Hungarian borderland. A place where the whole world was confined, preserving memories, stories of ancestors, witches, and oddballs, time-tested wisdom, and the power of herbs. The narrator Alma, the author's alter ego, captures the tragic and humorous tales of the women in her family, who have passed down the same first name for generations. She writes about love and death, about Hungarians in Slovakia, the importance of finding one's own identity, as well as female intuition and strength that allows one to endure fates as bitter as fallen apples. The book is a poetic family saga and the author's debut in fiction. Immediately upon release, it received a very warm reception from readers and also won the critics' award Golden Pen. It has been published in Polish and Serbian, and translations into Hungarian and English are currently in preparation. Beata Balogová is diligently working on its continuation.
