Rumors of an impending war are spreading across North Carolina, the North and South find themselves in irreconcilable conflict, but Joetta McBride pays little attention to it. She and her husband Ennis live modestly but happily on a small self-sufficient farm, raising two sons, fifteen-year-old Henry and eleven-year-old Robert. They do not support the Confederacy's stance on slavery; Joetta considers their family neutral and believes that the looming conflict does not concern them. Her conviction is a thorn in the side of many. Even her own father-in-law disagrees with her, telling the grandsons stories of heroic battles until one night, Henry runs away to join the war. At Joetta's desperate urging, Ennis sets out to bring him home. Weeks go by, and there is no news from either father or son. All responsibility for the farm falls on Joetta's shoulders.
