One day, a little boy named Oliver moves into an old apartment building with a strange modern extension, accompanied by his father. He feels lonely and misses his mother, who stayed in Britain. He wanders around the house and prefers to spend time in the 'sanatorium,' on the landing of a dirty staircase, where he sits on an old bench and reads. All the neighbors know him, even though they often don't know each other. The residents of the apartment building on Kalinova Street would often prefer to be islands unto themselves, but they have too much in common. The stairs, the pipes, the hole in the roof. They know every movement of each other, hear one another sneeze, curse, and sigh during lovemaking. They share memories and the hope that someone will always be there. They have always been connected by the house they live in. And now, also by that dark-haired boy with a book on the stairs.
