China during the Ming dynasty surpassed Europe in many ways, but in terms of women's status in society, it remained rigidly traditional. Regardless of family status, a woman was subordinate to a man from birth to death – in childhood to her father, in adulthood to her husband, and in old age to her son. Educating women was considered undesirable in 15th century China. However, Tchan Yün-sien comes from a family with a long tradition of medical education, and her grandmother teaches her to treat women's ailments from a young age. Despite all her education, she too must submit to the strictly hierarchical Confucian view of family and be primarily a daughter, wife, and mother. Nevertheless, Tchan Yün-sien manages to help and heal women despite all the limitations. Thanks to her education and friendships in the Lotus Circle of Women, she overcomes many social taboos, including contact with the "impure."
