A strange court case concerning post-war denazification lands on the desk of Dr. Hoffman, an American psychiatrist serving in Germany. Former Auschwitz guard Franz Dahler is summoned to court, bringing an unexpected witness with him – his former prisoner, who is now his wife, Helena. When another man, Andrej Novák, who was imprisoned in Auschwitz alongside Helena and has since become a 'full-time Nazi hunter,' recognizes the guard's name, he demands that Dahler's case be thoroughly investigated. He claims that this former SS member abused Helena in the camp, manipulated her, and is behaving no differently now as he brings her into the courtroom. Quiet and submissive, Helena does indeed seem like a classic victim of violence. She is dependent on her husband with every word, every movement. However, when she begins to translate her testimony for those present, Dr. Hoffman becomes increasingly confused by the image forming before his eyes. Helena speaks of the perpetrator as a savior and questions the prosecution's side. The more Hoffman hears from everyone...
