The story of the novel begins in 1866, when a mention of some sea monster of enormous size that attacks ships appeared in English newspapers. Some said it was a submarine, while others claimed it was an unknown creature. Americans sent the frigate Abraham Lincoln to the sea to clarify the mystery. The expedition included the French naturalist Professor Aronnax with his servant Conseil, who met the harpooner Ned Land on the ship.
