This fourth, substantially revised edition of the three-volume internal medicine textbook reflects developments since the previous three editions, including rapid advances in diagnosis and treatment within internal medicine and related specialties, as well as changes in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. Although it is not intended as a universal textbook for the examination following completion of the internal medicine core, it provides a systematic and comprehensive study resource. The textbook is primarily intended for medical students and doctors in the internal medicine core. It takes a mainly practical approach while retaining the essential theoretical knowledge, and its chapters offer clear, current and clinically oriented information on the causes, clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of internal diseases. Pathophysiological aspects are included to the extent necessary for understanding clinical symptoms and therapeutic procedures. The monograph covers the basic range of diseases across internal medicine, with particular emphasis on conditions most commonly encountered in general internal practice and on acute states. It also includes chapters on practical issues extending beyond individual internal specialties and selected topics from other medical fields. The authors are specialists from university hospitals, other specialised workplaces in the Czech Republic and general practice, including newly contributing young certified doctors. The texts were prepared with contributions from experienced doctors, younger colleagues and senior medical students, and take account of readers’ comments on earlier editions. The contents are in Czech. The first edition received the award of the J. E. Purkyně Czech Medical Society for the best book publication of 2010, while the second edition received the Czech Society of Internal Medicine award for 2015.
