A young woman undergoes a routine brain examination. Over the following days, a foreign voice begins to echo in her head. The intruder apparently has its own will and purpose. And now she faces one simple choice: resist or cooperate. A group of scientists, engineers, and doctors at a remote polar base is playing for the future of humanity, betting on one last desperate attempt to save it: to slightly alter the past and thus avert a global catastrophe. At the same time, however, they want to keep all recorded history intact and prevent a time paradox. For the experiment to succeed, they must recruit one last missing link: an elderly teacher whose deceased mother was the foremost expert on the mathematics of paradoxes.
