According to the prevailing opinion among those interested in the issue of the Crusades, these medieval activities were the result of the expansionist tendencies of an imperialistic medieval Christianity. However, this view significantly distorts the reality. This entire movement was rooted in European politics, where ecclesiastical power clashed with secular power, popes with emperors, and individual kings with each other, and this historically arisen phenomenon also decisively influenced the culture of the time and the contemporary knowledge of the world. The author has attempted in his publication to offer the reader an unbiased view of the Crusades, free from the ideological prejudices of the Enlightenment thinkers of previous centuries, and based on the latest studies of some newly published documents. He deals with the period from the call to arms to the fall of the last Crusader state in the Levant.
