Beschreibung
Selection from the Great World Fires Cities in Flames is a continuation of a series of books on the history of fire protection by the renowned author Josef Nitra. Following the titles Firefighters, Firemen, Firefighters (History of Czech Firefighting) and Fires (History of Fires in the Czech Lands until 1918), this publication expands the theme of fighting fire to the entire world. Readers will find themselves in more than eighty cities across all six inhabited continents. The author did not aim to compile the most perfect overview of disasters from available materials, as he did in his previous book, a geographical overview of fires in the Czech lands. The new book is the result of his effort to create a colorful mosaic of the greatest and most famous fire disasters throughout the ages from often exotic places he has personally visited. He connects them with his own story and insights related to the history and present of the places of the described tragedies. In many cases, he supplements them with facts about fire protection. It is not a classic encyclopedia, but rather cases often linked with interesting events, the causes of their occurrence, their course, and consequences. It also includes fires of some significant buildings, especially cultural monuments. This is the most extensive work to date...
