Beschreibung
On the mountain peaks of the sparsely populated American West, a network of fire lookout stations still operates today to detect fires early. The author of the book returns annually to the three-thousand-foot Apache Peak in southern New Mexico to guard the mountain and desert landscape below from April to August – this is an area where the occurrence of dry storms is the most frequent in the United States. The book offers an insightful look at the issue of fires, including historical and social contexts. It explains the natural ecological function of fire and shows how the approach to combating this element is currently being reevaluated. Above all, it is a poetic narrative about life amidst impenetrable forests and mountain peaks, about nature and solitude. The author consciously connects with a number of his famous predecessors, writers and occasional fire lookouts, including beatniks Gary Snyder and Jack Kerouac, who listened to the muses in solitude on mountain tops, as well as to their inner demons and fears.
