Beschreibung
Palomar is Italo Calvino's last major prose work, and here too the author opted for an original experiment. The chapters of this book could be perceived as prose poems, but they are more accurately described as a hybrid of a novel or poem with an essay. In Calvino's work, their titular protagonist, Mr. Palomar, has numerous predecessors – various commentators and speculative talents. All of them, like him, are great observers of the world, as observing things is, according to Calvino, our fundamental task. However, Mr. Palomar wants not only to see and understand the world but also to describe and express it: he wants to transform it into words. But can one seize the world with an authentic yet subjective perspective? Does the truth about the world lie in the immediacy of the moment? And how to grasp the 'unwritten' world? Calvino himself characterized this book as follows: 'A certain man sets out on a journey to gradually attain wisdom. He has not yet reached his destination.'
