Beschreibung
The first volume of In the Grip of Treachery focuses on events during the Nazi and Communist dictatorships, including the less-explored postwar period from 1945 to 1948. It offers a detailed, demythologizing view of events in Zlín and its surroundings, showing through specific examples that not everyone who presented themselves as a patriot after the war truly was one. It also reveals the stories of traitors and collaborators who pursued their own interests regardless of the regime. The authors draw on previously unexamined police, gendarmerie and investigative files to present new findings. The book describes the postwar takeover of the Baťa factories and the Communists’ leadership of the city of Zlín. Special attention is given to the dark roles of Zlín druggist Vladimír Hájek and Baťa employee JUDr. Ivan Holý, who, as collaborators with the Zlín Gestapo, used betrayal to build their postwar careers. The contents are in Czech, and the book is intended for readers interested in an objective treatment of regional history and taboo subjects from modern Czechoslovak history.
