Textová kritika a péče o texty – Shillingsburg Peter (2024)

This volume presents a selection of Peter Shillingsburg’s works from 1984 to 2016, compiled by the author specifically for this series. Drawing on four decades of work as a university teacher, theorist and editor, Shillingsburg summarizes his approach to the fundamental questions of textual criticism. The book is based on the idea of the text as an unstable representation of a work, shaped by the circumstances of its creation, including writing, printing and later changes in reprints and scholarly editions. Shillingsburg considers the relationship between a literary work and its textual representations, the specific nature of documents such as manuscripts and their versions, print and digitized text, the consequences of choosing a base text, and questions of authority in relation to the author and others involved in creating the text. He also examines different editorial approaches, arguing that no approach or edition is universal and that consistency and awareness of the consequences of each choice are essential. At the same time, he emphasizes respect for the author’s intention and the editor’s role in establishing a text, including through emendation. His discussion remains open to new ideas, including the use of digital media, and seeks to understand the various approaches to textual criticism that developed during the twentieth century, not only in the Anglo-American sphere.
