They entered the historical annals under the designation Winter War. The Republic of Finland, a state covering 383,000 km2 and having only 3.8 million inhabitants, faced the overwhelming superiority of Soviet invading forces. The Red Army launched an attack without declaring war and conducted offensive operations along the entire length of the 1,600-kilometer shared border, starting at the coast of the Gulf of Finland and ending at the Barents Sea in the far north, deep beyond the Arctic Circle. The bloody confrontation ultimately lasted a full 105 days. The Finns managed to hold back the onslaught of a vastly stronger enemy for many weeks. Soviet dictator J. V. Stalin was eventually forced to agree to a kind of compromise peace, far removed from the original war intentions to erase Finland from the map and make it part of the Soviet Union.
