The Second World War in Europe broke out on September 1, 1939, with the attack of Hitler's Nazi Germany on neighboring Poland. The German army, effectively supported from the air by the Luftwaffe, showcased its first example of blitzkrieg in the following days. On September 3, Great Britain and France formally entered the conflict. Although both Western European democracies declared war on Germany, their armed forces did virtually nothing to save their eastern ally. The abandoned Polish army was bleeding and retreating eastward. The command hoped to establish a solid defense on the eastern bank of the Vistula, where they could hold out until the long-awaited offensive of the French and British troops on the Western Front. But then, literally like a bolt from the blue, disaster struck for the Poles. On September 17, the Soviet Union also joined the attack on Poland, turning the hopes of a possible defense east of the Vistula into mere scraps of paper. The shaken Polish ambassador W. Grzybowski was summoned early that morning to the People's Commissariat for Foreign Affairs in Moscow, where he was informed by Deputy People's Commissar Potemkin that the Polish state had effectively ceased to exist, thereby nullifying the treaties between Poland and the USSR, and the Red Army entered...
