Beschreibung
This book primarily deals with language – language and politics, language and the future of literature, language and the machinations of totalitarian regimes, language and cultural decline, language and other ways of conveying meaning (music, translation, mathematics), and finally: language and silence. ***** What happens to language when it is in the service of totalitarian regimes, when it is used to defend their atrocities and murderous lies? ***** And how does it bear the imprint of the conditions of Western mass, consumption-oriented democracy with its dominant postulates of cultural industry? ***** Are we currently witnessing the end of a historical phase characterized by the dominance of verbal expression and classical literacy? Are we witnessing a phase of general decline of language, a phase in which we transition from words and classical literacy to 'post-linguistic' forms and partial silence? These are the questions I attempt to answer in these texts, or at least to draw attention to. G. S.
