The War Diary is a harsh and raw testimony of the strange war between Germany and France in 1939-1940. Private Malacki pulls no punches and presents a picture of war misery in a highly literary style, stripped of all illusions about heroism. This is not at all common in the Western European literary tradition, and the extent to which Malaquais shocked France with his War Diary is evidenced by the fact that after its publication by an exile publisher in the USA in 1943, it only received a 'proper' edition on French soil in 1997.
