Beschreibung
War is hell. And so is love. The year is 1914. Henry Gaunt, Sidney Ellwood, and other students at a prestigious boarding school in the English countryside feel the violence at the front is distant. Gaunt, half-German, is preoccupied with his private struggle – a consuming infatuation with his best friend, the charming Ellwood – unaware that Ellwood desires him too. Anti-German sentiments are rising in England, and Gaunt's family advises him to enlist, which he gladly does, seeing it primarily as an escape from his tormenting feelings for Ellwood.
But soon Ellwood and other classmates arrive at the front.
A thrilling and poignant story about the tragedy of war, but also about coming of age, lost innocence, and the struggle to overcome the fear of being oneself, captivates with its well-drawn characters and strong dialogues.
