Beschreibung
Deep in the remote corners of the Brazilian countryside, sisters Bibiana and Belonísia grow up as the daughters of a midwife and healer, who is also the spiritual father of the local Afro-Brazilian community. One day, they find an old mysterious knife in a trunk under their grandmother's bed. A child's recklessness leads to a horrific accident, intertwining the girls' lives to the extent that one must lend her voice to the other. Readers are presented with an impressive novel from the Brazilian hinterland, where grueling labor, lingering slave-like practices, and parched land represent the daily hard bread for both heroines and their relatives. In a masterfully constructed plot, the author cleverly combines realistic descriptions of twisted conditions with a melodic, almost fairy-tale narrative about traditional spirituality and family ties.
