With a touch of exaggeration, it can be said that Nabokov had three great passions besides literature – chess, butterflies, and films. The novel, in which art critic Albert Albinus yearns for seventeen-year-old acting student Margot and plays a relationship game full of paralyzing obsession, seems to pay homage to the film medium. After all, the first Russian edition of this work in 1932 was titled Kamera obskura, or "dark chamber." The author translated it into English six years later under the title Laughter in the Dark, with its fame further solidified by the film adaptation of the same name in 1969. In a book that captivates readers with the same enchanting force as the dimness of a movie theater, the writer weaves a psychological thriller about an unbalanced love affair, where the hunter becomes the prey. He outlines the contours of a drama that will foreshadow the scandalous Lolita. The afterword was written by Jiří Kratochvil.
