Beschreibung

Love, desire, infatuation, being in love, lust, jealousy, passion, broken heart. Writing songs about all of this is clichéd and lowbrow. But what if love songs – if we listen to them more closely – best express our emotions and their transformations throughout the twentieth century? Can pop charts reflect people's attitudes towards love and infatuation? Karel Veselý explores the history of pop from the rock 'n' roll generation of the 1950s through the 'love revolution' of the 1960s, presenting a picture of romantic relationships in rock, disco, or rave culture, and mapping the crisis of love in the new millennium. The story of pop ends with contemporary musicians defining radical forms of queer love. Each of the twelve chapters revolves around song lyrics, but also draws on contemporary philosophical or sociological theories. Thus, the pages of the book bring together Michel Foucault and bell hooks, Erich Fromm with the Beach Boys, Frank Ocean, or Britney Spears.
