Beschreibung
The military at the gates of the city signifies destruction, murder, rape, and robbery, at least in the general perception. However, soldiers also traded in cities and formed friendly, even familial relationships. Fortified cities sought to gain numerous advantages from their accommodation and support. The coexistence of urban and military elements in the limited territory of an inhabited locality, its impacts on the lives of townspeople, the harsh experiences with soldiers, as well as the surprising mutual social and economic benefits, are examined in the book through the example of the Thirty Years' War in the Czech-Moravian and German regions. The author studied the issue for many years in domestic and foreign archives and created a monograph that significantly contributes to the understanding of everyday life in the early modern period.
