Few periods in Czech history evoke such contradictory judgments among historians as the post-Battle of White Mountain era. According to some, it was a tragic epoch associated with violent re-Catholicization and the emigration of elites. Others view it as a time of monumental Baroque culture and education, a period when the Czech lands reopened to the world and caught up with the delays caused by dramatic confessional and national conflicts.
