Sára Fukuharová, a Czech by her mother and Japanese by her father, lives in Yokohama and is researching the endangered Japanese eel. Among her few friends are Mr. Nakajima, an elderly owner of the aquarium house where she lives, and her neighbor Miju, who never takes a step without her wooden sword and spends hours talking to the eel Unagi. The peaceful life in the aquarium is turned upside down by the visit of Yuka Suzuki, Sára's former classmate, who is searching for a missing colleague from the newspaper. Forgotten events from the past gradually resurface, and all three women embark on a journey that presents them with one life challenge after another. Memories of Eels is a multi-layered novel set in a Japanese environment that combines fantastical elements with a theme of investigation and brings a story of friendship, courage, and the power of memories.
