From conception and birth through upbringing and education to gaining first work experiences, all the way to the threshold of adulthood in the environment of cities, villages, and noble families, in families, schools, or orphanages, during war and peace. The first generous summary shows how the topic of childhood reflects not only knowledge about the development of education or law, about contemporary food, housing, clothing, or the craftsmanship of toys, but also psychological research on trauma or studies on the emergence and development of pediatrics as an independent medical field. However, childhood also has its 'great historical story.' Whether it concerns child marriages in medieval royal houses, Enlightenment reforms and the gradual establishment of legal protection for children, the celebration of childhood as the hope of humanity in the early phase of the communist regime, or conversely, the fear of the subversive potential of youth during normalization, the child is always also a political topic. And although in many of these cases it is more about its exploitation, thanks to civilizational shifts from the Middle Ages to the present, there are still more joyful moments in childhood.
